Uploaded by Randall Stukey on January 30, 2019. 19 downloads since then.

Microlite74 Release 1.1 is a six page PDF. It includes variant rules based on Microlite20, a complete spell list and monster list, and a short designer's note section touching on the differences in style between "old school" and the usual style of play encountered today. Release 1.1 contains minor error corrections (including fixing the power issues in 1.0), information on other OGL retrogames based on early editions of the world's most popular fantasy roleplaying game, and new rules for morale, hirelings, and equipment. Microlite74's rules were written to support the "old school" style, while retaining many of the more modern rules features of OGL games based on the 3.5 SRD. Microlite20 trimmed the fat from the 3.5 SRD, paring the game down to a fast-moving and easy to learn two-page system. Microlite74 takes the M20 system and modifies it for a 1974 style, but leaves most of the basic Microlite20 rules in place.

Uploaded by Randall Stukey on January 30, 2019. 21 downloads since then.

This is the very first released version of Microlite74. It's only 5 pages long (including the OGL in fine print). It includes variant rules based on Microlite20, a complete spell list and monster list, Microlite74's rules were written to support the "old school" style, while retaining many of the more modern rules features of OGL games based on the 3.5 SRD. Microlite20 trimmed the fat from the 3.5 SRD, paring the game down to a fast-moving and easy to learn two-page system. Microlite74 takes the M20 system and modifies it for a 1974 style, but leaves most of the basic Microlite20 rules in place.

WARNING: This version is very broken as it was not playtested beyond third or fourth level (and higher level characters are far too powerful for 0e monsters and adventures). The original idea for Microlite74 was that it could be used to introduce 3.x-era players to old school gaming. If they liked old school gaming, I just assumed they would they start a game using "real" rules. So I never actually played beyond third level. When others decided they liked both old school gaming and M74 -- and wanted to just play Microlite74 -- the problems with higher level characters were immediately apparent, were reported to me, and Microlite74 1.1 was released.

  • Microlite75 2.0 Extended (6.8m)
    In category: M75 Rules.
Uploaded by Randall Stukey on January 30, 2019. 13 downloads since then.

The Microlite75 Extended rules are based on three little booklets found in the boxed set of the 1974 original edition of the world’s most popular tabletop fantasy roleplaying game plus the supplements and other early published material. The rules are not intended to be a clone of the 0e rules, but rather a conversion of them to a rules-lite D20-based system that encourages old-school play without strictly old-school rules. Microlite75 Extended is based on the third edition of the original Microlite74 rules, modified to use advancement and experience systems closer to those of the original game and including many of the author’s house rules from the era and a large selection of optional rules.

  • Microlite75 2.0 Standard (3.4m)
    In category: M75 Rules.
Uploaded by Randall Stukey on January 30, 2019. 11 downloads since then.

The Microlite75 Standard rules are based on three little booklets found in the boxed set of the 1974 original edition (0e) of the world’s most popular tabletop fantasy roleplaying game and its supplements -- that is, everything that most groups used from 0e in the 1970s. The rules are not intended to be a clone of the 0e rules, but rather a conversion of them to a rules-lite D20-based system that encourages old-school play without strictly old-school rules. Microlite75 Standard is based on the third edition of the original Microlite74 rules, modified to use advancement and experience systems closer to those of the original game and including some of more popular systems from Microlite74 Extended (e.g. Body Points and Backgrounds).

  • Microlite75 2.0 Basic (2.3m)

Uploaded by Randall Stukey on January 30, 2019. 10 downloads since then.

The Microlite75 Basic rules are based on three little booklets found in the boxed set of the 1974 original edition (0e) of the world’s most popular tabletop fantasy roleplaying game. The rules are not intended to be a clone of the 0e rules, but rather a conversion of them to a rules-lite D20-based system that encourages old-school play without strictly old-school rules. Microlite75 Basic is based on the third edition of the original Microlite74 rules, modified to use advancement and experience systems closer to those of the original game and including some of more popular systems from Microlite74 Extended (e.g. Body Points and Backgrounds).

Although the Microlite75 Basic rules are complete, they are fairly basic. There are only three classes (Fighters, Magic-Users, and Clerics) -- however, backgrounds allow a great deal of easy character customization. Spells are limited and character levels top out at 12 to 14. Microlite75 Standard and Microlite75 Extended provide more classes and other options.

  • Microlite74 3.0: Perilous Adventures (7m)
    In category: M74 Variants.
Uploaded by Randall Stukey on January 30, 2019. 10 downloads since then.

Microlite74: Perilous Adventures is a Microlite74 variant originally designed for the author's Wilderlands campaign. This version takes the full rules from Microlite74 Expanded as a base, but trims things back to three character classes (Fighter, Cleric, and Magic-User) from the three original 0e booklets and uses backgrounds and different spell lists (illusion, necromancy, witchcraft, wizardry, clerical and druidry) allow a wide variety of player characters -- without all of the complexity of the additional classes and subclasses added in later versions of 0e. If you like the idea of the original three classes from the white box version of 0e, but would like more complete rules and a few more options for player characters, give this version of Microlite74 a try.

  • Microlite74 3.0 3d6 Edition (4.5m)
    In category: M74 Variants.
Uploaded by Randall Stukey on January 30, 2019. 8 downloads since then.

The Microlite74 3d6 Edition rules are based on the 1974 0e edition of the world’s most popular tabletop fantasy roleplaying game -- the original three booklets -- with some of the house rules the author used in the 1970s, and selected ideas from other roleplaying games. The major differences in this special 3d6 edition is that only D6s are needed for play (3d6 are rolled when a D20 would be rolled in standard versions) and the system includes partial successes as well as success and failure.

  • Microlite74 3.0 Light vs Dark (1001.3k)
    In category: M74 Variants.
Uploaded by Randall Stukey on January 30, 2019. 9 downloads since then.

Microlite74 Light vs Dark (formerly titled Microlite74 Special Version I) is a special version of Microlite74 is designed for a campaign world with only two deities (a Lord of Light (order) and a Lord of Darkness (chaos) who oppose each other). Magic is both common and rare in this campaign world in that about 25% of the population have the ability to use Minor Magic at will (including all characters and NPCs with a class level), but arcane magic is otherwise limited to long, complex, and costly rituals. Clerics have limited spell-like abilities called prayers. True magic Items are almost non-existent. What true magic items do exist are created by the GM as needed and are always one-of-a-kind. Magic items created by binding spirits to material items are more common.

The campaign these rules were designed for was centered around a large decadent empire which which was starting to fall apart at the seams while its borderlands were breaking away or were being overrun by subhumans and monsters. The central portions of the empire were ignoring the problems. The Church of Light was aware of the problems but its influence on the imperial government had been reduced by scandal after scandal. In the borderlands, however, the Church of Light was often the only institution able to see beyond local issues. The campaign world was early renaissance, at least in the central parts of the empire, but hand guns and long guns were never invented.

In includes everything Microlite74 standard does and adds rules for character backgrounds (optional in Basic and Standard), alignment, spell casting with implements and rituals, Body Points (representing actual major wounds), a slightly more detailed combat system, more spells and monsters, and other minor rules changes. It is slightly more complex in play than Microlite74 Standard, but not considerably so. The original edition of Microlite74 Extended was called Microlite75.
